A Day In The Life of an Addict
August 2006
This is a day in the life of me as an addict. I would
get up around 4:00 am. I would drive 30 minutes each
way to go
and pick up some drugs (morphine). I would call the night
before and if I couldn’t go and pick up the drugs that
night he would put the drugs somewhere and let me know where
they were. They would be on the side of the road, in a mailbox,
back of a truck, in an old tire, etc. Depending on how many
I got, I would do one or two when I got them. It would take
me right at an hour to get to work. I have a few things to
do when I first got there. I would do another [pill] at 6:30
am or 7:00 am. We would usually change over around 10:00 am
or 10:30 am and I would do another one then. We took lunch
about 12 noon. I would do one or two after I ate lunch. It
was always a guess what time we got off work. Usually it would
be between 6:00 pm ‘til 9:00 pm. I would do one between
that time. I would do another when I got off work. I would
get on the phone and start calling to see what I was going
to get that night or the next morning. It was like drugs were
always on my mind. I would wake up thinking about drugs ‘til
I went to bed. I would get anywhere from 5 to 20 [pills] every
day or every other day. If I didn’t have anything I
physically couldn’t get up to go to work.

September 2006 Update
This is a day in my life since I have been clean. I get
up around 5:30 am. I am in Phase III so I have take homes
on
Monday – Wednesday. The other days I go dose. I don’t
spend near the money I did. I don’t spend the time looking
for something. I’m not worried about being pulled over
by the police. When I get off work I can go straight home
and play with my son. That means the world to me. The clinic
has given me so much of my life back. I am able to pay my
bills and still have some money left at the end of the month
to buy my son some toys. I am getting myself out of the hole,
not digging myself deeper in. That’s wonderful.
